How much can you earn?
Freelance web designer earnings vary widely based on location, experience, and whether you work independently or in-house. Lindy works entirely for herself, which she says is the best way to scale income — no ceiling, no one telling you what to charge.
Beginner / entry level: $40K–$60K
Starting out, whether through freelance marketplaces like Upwork or early local clients, expect to earn on the lower end. Building a portfolio and a referral network takes time.
Mid-level (3–7 years experience): $65K–$100K
Once you have a steady client base and a defined niche, rates rise significantly. At this stage, many freelancers add branding, SEO, and content development to their services, increasing the value per project.
Experienced solo designer / studio owner: $100K–$150K+
Established freelance designers with strong referral networks and premium positioning can command project fees in the range of $10K–$25K+ per engagement. A full branding-plus-website project at this level can take eight weeks and price accordingly.
Per-project pricing factors: How large is the site? Does it require e-commerce? Is branding included? How much content development is needed? Lindy custom-quotes every project based on these variables.

FAQ
How much do freelance web designers make?
Freelance earnings vary widely depending on experience, pricing, location, and client base. Many freelancers earn more than salaried designers because they control their own rates and workload.
Do you need a college degree to become a web designer?
Not necessarily. Many successful web designers are self-taught or learn through online courses and real-world projects. A strong portfolio is often more important than a degree.
What software should aspiring web designers learn?
Lindsay recommends learning the Adobe Creative Suite, while also exploring tools like Figma, which has become one of the industry's most popular interface design platforms. Beginners can also start with free design software before investing in professional tools.
How do web designers get clients?
Many begin through freelance marketplaces such as Upwork. As their portfolio grows, referrals often become the primary source of new business. Lindsay says nearly all of her current work comes through word-of-mouth recommendations.
How long does a typical website project take?
A complete branding and website project typically takes around eight weeks, although timelines depend heavily on client communication and project complexity.
What advice does Lindsay give aspiring web designers?
Stay curious, keep learning new design trends, practice constantly, embrace new technology, establish healthy work-life boundaries, and remember that the best websites come from truly understanding the client's business—not simply making something that looks attractive.
