What yoga teachers actually make
Yoga teacher income has three main streams — group classes, private sessions, and studio ownership — and the numbers look very different depending on which combination you build.
Group classes are the volume play. Class cards typically run $15–$24 per person at a local studio. If you're teaching 8–10 classes a week and filling rooms with 15–40 students, the math can work in your favor — especially in summer when seasonal visitors push class sizes up. A full class of 40 paying $15–$20 each clears $600–$800 before expenses, in a single session.
Private sessions are the steady income. Linda charges $125–$150 per 40–50 minute session. Her private clients tend to be consistent — many are executives, athletes, or people dealing with specific physical issues like joint replacements — and they show up reliably week after week. Carrying 20 private clients a week at that rate starts to build serious annual income.
Studio ownership is where it gets complicated. Your biggest costs are rent and teacher salaries. But yoga has no perishable inventory, no cooking staff, no dishwashers — which means a slow week doesn't hurt the way it would at a restaurant. The catch: if you don't own the building, covering fixed costs through lean months requires either savings, a secondary income stream, or a side hustle. Linda eventually bought property and runs an Airbnb as a buffer.
Teaching part-time / early stage $20K – $40K
Full-time classes + privates $50K – $75K
Studio owner + multiple revenue streams $75K – $100K+
High-volume studio / urban market $100K+
Geography matters a lot. In New York City, rents are dramatically higher and you need to pack classes consistently to make the numbers work. In a smaller market like Woodstock, overhead is lower — but so is the pool of students. Linda's approach: stay lean, teach a lot yourself, and don't give away your revenue to too many employees before you've built a stable base.
